Admissions

Thank you for your interest in The Opportunity Charter School. OCS is a small school located in Harlem, New York and focuses on ensuring the success of all students. We offer an extensive academic program geared towards general education and special education students, grades 6 through 12. Please let us know if we can answer any questions you may have about the OCS experience.

Just the Basics

A charter school is an independently run public school. In return for a high level of measurable student performance, charter schools are given a greater amount of flexibility than traditional public schools. Every five years the charter is renewed, which is based on a number of factors, such as student achievement. All New York City students are eligible for admittance on a tuition free basis. School funding derives from public tax dollars as well as outside sources. Students are not discriminated against on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, gender, disability or any other reason covered by anti-discrimination law.

Similarly to a public school, OCS students are eligible for city benefits, such as metro cards, transportation (if listed on an IEP), and breakfast/lunch. Our students are required to wear a school uniform. Middle school students wear khaki pants, a white logo-shirt, and a burgundy sweater while the high school students wear grey pants, a white logo-shirt, and a grey sweater. Students can choose their own footwear.

OCS is located at 240 West 113th Street between Fredrick Douglass Blvd. and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. The high school is on the 3rd floor of the building and the middle school is located on the 4th floor. The following are the closest modes of transportation: Bus- M10, M2, M2L, M4L, M3, M4, M18 or Subway- 2, 3, B, C at the 110th Street Stations.

The OCS student body is comprised of 420 students in grades 6 through 12. Each class has roughly 22 to 24 students with either a team of two certified teachers or a certified teacher and a teaching assistant. The majority of the classes are inclusion style, meaning both special education and general education students learn together, while other classes are self contained- depending on a students individual learning needs.
