Academics
At OCS
OCS provides a rigorous curriculum aligned to the New York State Standards with a particular emphasis on individualizing education to meet students needs. We have adopted a new instructional model (FEI) to help our students develop necessary critical thinking skills. OCS has selected the Framework for Effective Instruction because it was developed to address three glaring areas in teaching and learning:
- FEI has developed common language and protocols to supervise and evaluate instruction
Student Comprehension Across Content Areas
- FEI has instituted professional development in the use of learning strategies across curriculum
Higher-Order Thinking
- Many of our students are only able to remember and understand basic level of information. In order for them to be successful, they need to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information. To that end, FEI has developed a strategic approach to infuse Blooms Taxonomy to develop higher-order thinking skills.
It is the synthesis of all three of these areas that will transform our instructional practices so that our students will be able to excel academically.
We offer enrichment and a flexible scheduling for students who need acceleration that enables them to take advanced classes in the content areas in which they excel. All of our high school classes focus on preparing students to pass the Regents test. For those who are struggling we offer remediation and additional instructional support throughout the school day and extended day programs. For instance, in the high school, we offer extensive opportunities for credit recovery for students who need additional support. Students are assessed on Scantron twice a year in English and Math, as well as shorter assessments every nine weeks.
