Academics
Math
We believe that numeracy and financial literacy are crucial to an education. Our Mathematics curriculum follows the New York State requirements leading up to the Regents diploma. We offer double periods throughout the week for our middle school students as well as for most of our high school students. Our primary resource is Prentice Hall and Prentice Hall Investigations. For students who need additional remediation, we offer self-contained Math classes taught by certified Special Education teachers.
Science
Science at OCS follows the New York State Regents curriculum path. Our students prepare for the 8th grade State Science test and the High School Regents tests. We have partnered with NYUs Urban Advantage Middle School program, which provides science professional development and resources to our middle school science teachers, free class trips to local zoos and museums for students and parents, and helps prepare students for participation in our mandatory science fairs. We use a variety of textbook resources including those from Glencoe, Prentice Hall, and AGS. We also provide high-interest science books in the science classrooms. Our science curriculum fosters inquiry-based, hands-on learning where students work collaboratively to find solutions to problems. During the summer, we offer science enrichment classes. Our high school students meet the required coursework for a Regents diploma and take a variety of electives to help them prepare for college coursework.
OCS will have its first high school graduation in June 2010
